ZAUBERKÖNIG finishes Sixth in 142th Derby Italiano (Gr.2)

Four weeks ago, the Peter Schiergen-trained ZAUBERKÖNIG was successful in the Premio Emanuele Filiberto in Milan, where he scored a superior victory, and today he competed under top British jockey Tom Marquand in the 142th running of the €640,200 Gr.2 Derby Italiano. The Teofilo colt, who is racing for Liberty Racing 2023 Kings, was the intended horse here due to his convincing win in the Filiberto, but unfortunately the Derby dream could not be realized today. Over the distance of 2,200 meters, Zauberkönig was stuck at the back of the 18-head-strong field from the start and was unable to find a gap for a long time in the final straight. When Marquand found a hole for him, the colt made a good move, but it was too late and he had to settle for sixth place, two and a half lengths behind the winner.
